The events of 9/11 has changed the way we travel. To keep America safe, new rules for travel have been enacted for our own protection from terrorists or unsavory characters. As a result, the REAL ID Act is being enforced throughout the United States.
The REAL ID, is a federal security standard for state driver’s licenses that was passed in 2005. It allows machine-readable technology to read a chip on your state driver’s license. Some states are having trouble with compliance because of not having money in the budget to switch to the new technology. And other states are outright refusing to upgrade to the new technology.
Here are some important dates to consider regarding this new federal law for travel:
If your State is lagging behind and has not upgraded its technology you may need to show another valid form of ID. As of October 2018, the states and US Territories that have been granted an extension are: California, Guam, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Virginia, US Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands, Rhode Islands, Alaska, Montana, Northern Marianas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, American Samoa, New Jersey, Maine, Oklahoma and Oregon. Every US State and Territory must be in compliance by 2020. Frequent travelers worried that their state won't comply by January 2020 should consider obtaining a passport card or book. For a current list of compliance, visit the Homeland Security website by clicking here.
As of July 2018, the State of Ohio started issuing REAL ID as a form of identification. There is no extra cost for obtaining the new REAL ID when updating your driver’s license. To obtain the enhanced ID you will need special supporting documents such as your birth certificate, social security number, and two forms for proof of residence. The enhanced driver’s license is not mandatory. However, if you plan to fly anywhere (including within the US) after January 2020 and do not have another form of ID, such a passport card or book, you may be turned away at the airport. So, whether you plan to travel outside of the United States or not, it may be a good time to consider either a passport book, passport card or both. If you have any further questions about passports books, passport cards, visas, or REAL ID, please contact AJ! Or Sharon at As You Wish Luxury Travel at 1-844-748-9474.
One of the most common question that we receive at As You Wish Luxury Travel is: “Are travel agents needed when there are so many online travel booking sites?” Does the Internet helps or hurts travel agents? What are the benefits of using a travel agent? First let’s look at a bit of what has happened since about the year 2000.
As a well-known liberal arts college town, Oberlin, Ohio has people constantly traveling to and from it. About 25 years ago there were two bricks-and-mortar travel agencies in Oberlin. One was Oberlin Travel and the other was AAA. When the Internet boom took over in about the year 2000, it put a damper on these type of bricks-and-mortar travel agency businesses and they closed. Online travel began to boom and as a result it seemed unnecessary for a person or organization, like Oberlin College, to use a travel agent to book what could easily be completed online in a few minutes. But travel agents are making a comeback and the Internet is a benefit to travel agents.
At one time the Internet was a useful way to book travel. However, there is so much information online that booking a new and different trip online can be overwhelming. It can take at least five hours for an individual to research a vacation online. Isn’t a vacation supposed to be relaxing and stress-free? Once the vacation is booked you hope and pray you made a good choice for all the money that is being spent.
When booking your vacation online, all you have are pictures and online reviews. Is that enough when spending hundreds, even thousands of dollars for a much needed vacation? What do you do if something goes wrong before, during, or after your vacation? Who are you going to call for assistance if there is a problem? Just think, if you book through your trusted and well-resourced travel agent – most of these concerns will vanish or be resolved.
If you schedule the same vacation, year after year, then perhaps you don’t want to use a travel agent. However, if you are seeking new and exciting adventures such as high-end all-inclusive resorts worldwide, Hawaii, Ocean & River Cruises, romance travel such as honeymoon or a destination then let As You Wish Travel Agency help you. We can offer low-price/price-match guarantee along with peace-of-mind before, during, and after your travel 24/7 to assist you if there is a problem.
Contact As You Wish Luxury Travel for your next group or family vacation, if you love going on vacation but hate all the planning that goes with it. Stricter TSA Rules
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says that it will introduce stricter rules on powder-like substances on inbound international flights starting June 30. Passengers with more than 12 ounces of powders boarding a flight (e.g., cosmetics, ground coffee, spices) will undergo additional screening and may be prohibited from boarding with the substances if they cannot be verified as safe. (They may go in checked bags.) Similar rules already apply to U.S. domestic flights.
Resort & Hotel Updates
Marriott International says it will ban plastic straws and stirrers at all of its properties over the next year, offering decomposable alternatives on request. Also, Uniworld says it will eliminate the use of plastics such as straws and single-use water bottles by 2022.
Canada's first Club Med Village (set to open in late 2020) now has a name: Club Med Quebec Charlevoix. It will be the first-ever four-season Club Med Village.
Take an extra bank card and credit card with you. Disasters happen. It’s always good to have a backup in case you get robbed or lose a card. You don’t want to be stuck somewhere new without access to your funds.
