Some of the breathtaking adventures activities, shown below, is Mount Pilatus, in Lucerne, which offers a round trip up the mountain by gondola and a cogwheel train coming back down.
There are many activities to do in Switzerland. Although many believe it is purely a winter playground. Upon arrival you will find it also has so much to offer year-round. Traveling throughout the country is easy as the roads are modern and very well maintained.
In such a mountainous country, it’s little surprise that there are tunnels galore in the hillsides – over 200 of them. As a matter of fact, Switzerland's Gotthard base railway tunnel is the one of the longest in the world – measuring over 35 miles in length, located about 1.5 miles under the Alps. It saves almost an hour transit between the cities of Zurich and Lugano, and also crosses Germany and connects the port of Genoa in Italy.
There are 4 major cities, Bern, Zurich, Geneva and Lugano, but the smaller ones such as Lucerne and Basel are not to be missed either. For instance, Lucerne’s name literally translates to “the City of Lights”. Visiting beautiful Lucerne is like taking a step back in time, where Lake Lucerne’s calm waters and Mt. Pilatus serves as a magnificent backdrop, a source of inspiration and is a playground for many hikers. There also is a museum called Sammiung Rosengart. Here, visitors will see the works of Picasso, Cezanne, Miro, Monet and Matisse.
In Basel, travelers can easily enjoy the many offerings of this city. Rotes Rathaus is the town hall at Marktpl, where statues in gold and green can be seen. A seven century old bridge named the Mittiere Rheinbrucke Middle Rhine joins the two sides of Basel is a great location to take a leisurely stroll. There is the Jean Tinguely Fountain or the Fasnachtsbrunnen, a beautiful fountain for great photos. Basel is situated on the Rhine close to France and Germany, where the river cruise ships can be viewed traveling daily in both directions.
The events of 9/11 has changed the way we travel. To keep America safe, new rules for travel have been enacted for our own protection from terrorists or unsavory characters. As a result, the REAL ID Act is being enforced throughout the United States.
The REAL ID, is a federal security standard for state driver’s licenses that was passed in 2005. It allows machine-readable technology to read a chip on your state driver’s license. Some states are having trouble with compliance because of not having money in the budget to switch to the new technology. And other states are outright refusing to upgrade to the new technology.
Here are some important dates to consider regarding this new federal law for travel:
If your State is lagging behind and has not upgraded its technology you may need to show another valid form of ID. As of October 2018, the states and US Territories that have been granted an extension are: California, Guam, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Virginia, US Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands, Rhode Islands, Alaska, Montana, Northern Marianas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Pennsylvania, American Samoa, New Jersey, Maine, Oklahoma and Oregon. Every US State and Territory must be in compliance by 2020. Frequent travelers worried that their state won't comply by January 2020 should consider obtaining a passport card or book. For a current list of compliance, visit the Homeland Security website by clicking here.
As of July 2018, the State of Ohio started issuing REAL ID as a form of identification. There is no extra cost for obtaining the new REAL ID when updating your driver’s license. To obtain the enhanced ID you will need special supporting documents such as your birth certificate, social security number, and two forms for proof of residence. The enhanced driver’s license is not mandatory. However, if you plan to fly anywhere (including within the US) after January 2020 and do not have another form of ID, such a passport card or book, you may be turned away at the airport. So, whether you plan to travel outside of the United States or not, it may be a good time to consider either a passport book, passport card or both.
